When the bell rang sentencing us all back to our classroom I realized that I hadn't even ate one bite of my lunch. I was too distracted by Evan. Now I was going to be hungry for the rest of the day. Maybe being alone was the safest thing to do for me. Then the thought accrued to me that Evan didn't have lunch either. I guess we would starve together.
'Ring ring!' went someone's telephone. Evan took a nice looking telephone out of his pocket and turned to me.
"I have to answer this it's my father. Can you cover for me?" Evan asked.
"Sure." I told him walking towards the door and into the crowd of people rushing to get to class in fear of detention. When I got in the class and took my seat in the front the seat farthest from Nicole Mr. Ackerman gave me a funny look.
"Arianna, where is Evan?" he asked expecting him to be with me.
"Um. . . he's in the bathroom. He said that he didn't feel good." I lied.
"Oh, take good notes for him then." Mr. Ackerman said with a smile.
"Yes sir." I said. I turned around to my book bag behind me and accidently got caught in Nicole's angry glance. I quickly turned away. 'I don't need her. Whatever she says does not matter. Evan was right I do deserve more that her.' I told myself. A sense of guilt quickly took over my mind. I paid no attention to it instead I focused on Mr. Ackerman's lesson. Halfway through Evan came through the door apologizing that he was so late. Mr. Ackerman did not punish him instead he wished that he felt better. Evan smiled and took his seat beside me.
"Illness, that's a classic excuse." He whispered to me.
"I couldn't think of anything." I defended, he just chuckled quietly.
Mr. Ackerman droned on and on and I tried my best just to stay awake. Every time I laid my head down I would pinch myself just to keep my eyes open. Eventually the bell interrupted Mr. Ackerman's long lecture and everyone was in a mad dash to get out of the class room.
"Alright we will continue this tomorrow and do not forget to do your homework I want it on my desk by 8 o' clock no exceptions." Mr. Ackerman said.
"Yay, homework." Evan said sarcastically.
"It's not that bad." I told him putting my notes in my binder and packing my things.
"I guess not it could be 100 questions instead of 20, but still its homework." Evan said with a short laugh slinging his book bag's strap over his shoulder.
"Come on be optimistic!" I said brightly walking out the door with him beside me.
"That's hard for me to do." He said.
"And why's that?" I asked quizzically.
"I've just been through too much it's hard to find happiness." Evan said.
"Well you have me!" I quoted him. He smiled big.
"Yes, and while we are on the subject of you would you like to go to the cinema with me tomorrow?"  Evan asked I could hear the fear in his voice.
"As a date?" I questioned since we had just met this morning.
"No more like a hey-I-like-you-as-a-friend-and-would-like-to-get-to-know-you thing." Evan said blushing.
"Okay I'll see if my father will let me go, but we might have to go with my brother if he actually approves of it." I said.
"You have a brother?" Evan asked surprised.
"A twin one, which makes him even more annoying, his name is Amos." I said.
"Well, I'm excited to meet him!" Evan said.
"Yeah, he's not excited to meet you." I said hoping that my father and brother would be nice to Evan. He seemed like a nice guy. Evan laughed.
"I think I can handle it." He said.
"You haven't seen my family yet." I said simply
"I think I'm about to this is your house isn't it?" Evan asked as I took out my key to open the door.
"Oh my gosh! I made you walk home with me. I'm so sorry I didn't notice." I apologized my cheeks turning scarlet.
"It's okay I don't mind." He said.
"You should. You probably had a ride and now they are going to be wondering where you are. And now you have to walk all the way back to school and possibly your home-" I said feeling so terrible but Evan cut me off by grabbing my shoulders tightly.
"Arianna it's alright." Evan said.
"You! What do you think you're doing! Get your hands off my sister!" Amos yelled from the door way. Evan quickly returned his hands to his sides.
"This is Amos." I said.
"It's nice to meet you." Evan said politely putting out his hand for a handshake. Amos just stared at it.
"Yeah, you too. Arianna come on I need your help with my Spanish homework." Amos said refusing to look at Evan.
"I could help you with that if you would like." Evan offered even after Amos's coldness towards him. I think I might actually enjoy this hey-I-like-you-as-a-friend-and-would-like-to-get-to-know-you thing.
"What do you know about Spanish?" Amos asked with a harsh tone of voice.
"Well, I'm not an expert, but I did live in Spain a week ago." Evan joked.
"Amos be nice." I ordered him.
"Fine." Amos said moving out of the doorway and letting us both in.
"So what are you having troubles with?"Evan asked walking with Amos to the dining table.
"Conjugating." Amos said simply. Evan laughed.
"It's not that hard at least it's not hard as your double meaning words and slang. Honestly how did you learn English?" Evan said.
I pulled out my note book and started my homework. Out of one ear I was listening to their conversation to see if they were being nice to each other.  Surprisingly I did not hear a single threat, in fact they were even laughing.
On my fourth problem I started to get annoyed with myself. I kept on glancing at Evan uncontrollably. I told myself to stop, but the way he moved, and the way he talked, and the way he looked I just couldn't avert my eyes from his lavender eyes, or pale long-fingered hands, or his defined body. No, no, no, no! I have homework to do! Focus Arianna.
"Thanks Evan." Amos said then he grabbed his collar and whispered something in his ear that I couldn't hear.
"I'll keep that in mind. If you have any more problems just call me, here I'll write down my number."  Evan said getting out a piece of paper and scribbling his number down.  Once he was done he looked over my shoulder.
"Is the homework really that hard?" Evan asked.
"No, I've just been distracted." I told him.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Well, I'll see you tomorrow."  Evan said playing with the crappy pony-tail I put my hair in once I started my homework.
"Okay have a good night." I told him as he started walking towards the door.
"You too."  I said. He waved me a goodbye and walked out the door.
"I don't like him." Amos said once the door shut.
"Shut up. You better be nice to him. He just came here from Spain. It must be hard on him." I told him.
"Yeah that's the only reason you want me to be nice to him." Amos said. "Arianna and Evan sittin' in a tree k-i-s-s-i-n-g!" Amos started singing. I threw my pencil at his face, but he still didn't stop. "First comes love. Second comes marriage. Third comes a baby in a baby carriage."
"You're such an idiot." I said getting up and getting my pencil back.
"Me?! You're the one that's going after a Spanish guy!" Amos exclaimed.
"What's wrong with Spanish guys?" I asked.
"I don't know, but I bet there probably is something wrong." Amos said.
"He's actually Estonian for your information." I said angrily jotting down the answer to problem five.
"What's Estonian?" Amos asked proving his stupidity.
"I'm not even going to talk to you anymore." I sighed.
"Is that the homework they give you at your fancy private school? You should of stayed in public school." Amos commented looking over my shoulder.
"Will you just go away?!" I exclaimed elbowing him in the stomach. He laughed and walked away.
"Do you want me to make dinner tonight?"Amos asked.
"No! I don't want to be poisoned!" I yelled.
"I'm not that bad of a cook." Amos said from the kitchen as I finished up problem ten and my stomach started rumbling.
"Yes you are. Now step away from the kitchen and go play Xbox or something." I said.
"Okay Ms. Bossy." Amos said.
After ten minutes I finally got done with the homework Mr. Ackerman assigned and I went in the kitchen to cook dinner for Amos whose stomach was always empty even though he eats all the time.
"Whatchya makin?"  Amos asked his eyes still glued to the TV screen.
"Breakfast." I said knowing that was his favorite meal.
"With bacon?" he asked.
"Yes, but you're not allowed to eat it until it's all done." I told him.
"You're so evil!!" He exclaimed. I laughed as I got out bacon, butter, cheese, and eggs.
After I flipped the fifth pancake my dad came through the door still in his dirty work clothes.
"How was your day, Hun?" He asked hugging me from behind.
"It was good. There was a new boy at school today." I told him.
"Was there? I'm assuming you two are friends since you're telling me about him." He said taking a seat beside Amos.
"Yes and I was wondering if I could go to the movies with him tomorrow." I said hoping he would say yes while finishing off all the pancakes I wanted to make and mixing the eggs together.
"The movies? You're not allowed to date." Dad said.
"Yes I am you told me I could a year ago and plus we aren't even dating we are just going as friends." I said.
"Just as friends? Is that what he said? Oh, I'll kill him. 'Just friends'! Where does he live?" Dad exclaimed.
"Here's his number." Amos said pausing his game and handing him Evan's number.
"Dad, don't!" I yelled grabbing the phone out of his hand. "Please dad, do this for me. I haven't had friends in forever I just want to have fun." His eyes soften and a slight smiled appeared.
"Okay, but Amos has to go with you." Dad said.
"Dad, please. I can go alone. I'm a big girl." I said returning to the kitchen.
"I know you are, but if I let you go alone I'll know what he'll do. I was a teenage boy once. First he'll-" Dad started warming up to his boy-want-nothing-but-sex talk.
"Okay, okay dad! Amos can come!" I yelled not wanting to go through that awkward talk again. Amos and dad laughed at my red face.
Well I guess this was better than not going at all and Evan and Amos seemed to get along. Maybe this might work out after all.
That surprisingly didn't take as long as I had expected. I hope you enjoyed the second chapter of Shadows! Find out what will happen on this three person hey-I-like-you-as-a-friend-and-would-like-to-get-to-know-you thing in the third chapter of Shadows!
